Cranked up the AZPlus tonight and noticed when I would tune into tp`s on a set sat then the Q would gradually drop until gone!!....I checked other box`s tied into the setup which were coming from the same multiswitch and all is fine!

As I narrowed things down I see the problem was the Plus was getting way to hot!..Fan had quit working!..She was very hot to the touch and have never felt it so hot before!

I sure hope I did not damage this box from all the heat.Anybody know where to find a 2 pin 40x40x10!!!! Fan??Had ordered one from China for a dvr but it never showed up..So hope things are run differently now..Like to find one state side?

Here is what I find after removing original fan..Oritek model RO54010SL DC5V...  .13Amps....Naturally made in China!.Just cant find a 5v 2 pin that matches.

Took the fan and cleaned with contact cleaner and sprayed with liquid wrench.Sprayed out with air compressor.brought it back to life and keeping a very close eye on the Plus.....Does not run as smooth as before problem arose but is working...Where to find a replacement I will keep looking!

try looking thru Mouser and Digikey for something that looks comparable.
Once you apply suitable filtering criteria, and see some results,
they usually have datasheets you can look at including mechanical info.
Hope it remains stable for ya where it's not needed.

http://www.mouser.com/Thermal-Management/Fans-Blowers/Fans/_/N-axga4?Keyword=brushless+fan&FS=True

http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/fans-thermal-management/dc-fans/1179730?k=brushless%20fan

I'm sure you can also find sellers on ebay, with free shipping, but not as likely to be able to find
datasheets / mechanical data to go along with it. But who knows maybe you'll get lucky.

I've used" Newark element 14" for my electronic supply store  when I needed parts for my az plus power supply, spec sheets are shown with part , delivery time was two days to Canada , $8.00 delivery charge so I doubled up on components needed, and they requested feedback on their performance. This site will be my one stop shop for all my electronic needs.

Thanks for the responses and links.I never was able to get an exact match any where I searched but I did find a seller from China that has a very close match.I went ahead and ordered 3..Figure $13.40 including shipping is cheap enough. Also while doing some electronics cleaning, out of curiosity I decided to take the fan out of the AZUltra and see if it was identical.Dimensionaly it was the same as the Plus but the rating was slightly different,it was .18A instead of .13 that was in the Plus.I cant see a big difference in 6/100ths of an amp between the 2 fans is not much at all so I settled for this here..Split the difference.

Ultra quiet Low-speed brushless DC fan
- Size: 40mm (L) x 40mm (W) x 10mm (H)
- Material: High Quality Plastic Housing
- 9 Plastic Blades
- Speed: 6000 RPM
- Airflow: 5.84 CFM
- Noise: 25 DBA
- Rating: DC 5V , 0.15A
- Low speed, moderate air flow
- Quiet sleeve-bearing design
- Fit compact computer cases, power supplies,
etc

Just installed new fan from China with specs from previous post.Oh my what a lie about it being ultra quiet.....Sounds like a single prop airplane in my living room!!!.One thing for sure is I have never felt the AZPlus so cool to the touch but the sound from this is irritating to say the least.Have started the search again for a quiet fan....Geez one wouldn't think it could be that difficult..Oh well.

Hi Hockeynut,

I don't know if this is possible, but if it's running real cool with the new fan, maybe you could slow it down some by adding a series resistor.  I would start with something like a 15 Ohm 1/2 to 1 Watt resistor.  That would drop the voltage about 1.5 VDC so the motor would see about 3.5 VDC (this is approx voltages, could vary a bit).  Instead of using a resistor, you could also use a couple 1N4002 diodes to drop the voltages about 1.4 VDC.  Just be sure to put the diodes in series and in the same direction.  If the fan does not run, turn the diodes in the other direction.  If the fan is still too fast, you could increase the resistor value, or add another diode to drop the voltage a little bit more.

Good luck,
John

I ran into a similar problem when looking for a quiet PC for a friend. I found a wealth of useful information at

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article63-page2.html

The whole site is dedicated to building extremely quiet PCs for home theater systems and other similar applications. A quick check of their fan reviews brought up this item as a starting point:

http://www.amazon.com/Noiseblocker-NB-BlackSilentFan-XM1-40mmx10mm-Ultra/dp/B002DG1QUM

http://www.blacknoise.com/en/products/it/12/Noiseblocker-NB_BlackSilentFan_40mm#yw1_tab_3

Hope this helps.

edit I am so slow two good responses were given before i hit the save button to reply

So you can be in the same room with your new prop driven STB.  lol .... 9 blades I thought was supposed to be quieter.
seriously there are alot of us with AZ ultra and AZplus that will need replacements for the fans eventually. I would appreciate  the help and would purchase one for a spare in case one stops.
Thanks  Hockeynut for your efforts. please post your conclusions

Well, a closer look at the Noiseblocker fan's specs show that it's a 10V DC model with 3 pins so it's not exactly what you're looking for. Maybe other models on SilentPC's site will be a better match.

This is the closest match I found but it's not as quiet as the Noiseblocker.

Did you actually install one such fan in your AZBox? I am looking for one for my Premium + receiver. On the web link you gave above, I see two different fans, one with plain bearings, the other one with ball bearings. Which one should I order?

Thanks for your help

I realize that my post mislead you. The link I mentioned in my post belongs to MG and I was asking him a question about the product it leads to. I have not ordered either fan. I just wanted to know if he had ordered and installed one.

I am sorry about the confusion I have caused.

I received that fan :http://smart-prototyping.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=220". It is the right size. Unfortunately it is a three wire model while the one in my AZBox is a two wire. I don't see how I can install the new one with its three wires.

Any suggestion?

Thanks
