upstairs and downstairs

I finally found a way to control my motorized ku dish from two different receivers at the same time. Most if not all multiswitches do not pass usals commands. Therefore if you use one .....only one stb can control the motor...the one run to the motor before the multiswitch. I found one that works. They are the old radio shack 2x4 multiswitch. They were literally giving them away at $0.99. I bought 5. I then connected my two s10s to it on port 1of their diseqc switches. Then from there i went from the 18V to the motor. I then ran from my zinwell multiswitch that has the ku dish inputs and ten foot cband inputs to the motor. I also ran one from the zinwell to the 13V side of radio shack multiswitch. I now can move and watch tv off either s10 and both on at the same time. My az moves my big cband dish from upstairs...but i have the vbox downstairs....therefore i can control both cband dish and ku dish from upstairs or downstairs. One note of caution. Those multiswtches also pass diseqc commands, and they can backfeed the command and change the other diseqc switches connected to it. But controlling the dish can be done from two places. Hope this helps someone. Also with this setup you can only move the dish with 18V H channels. But you could easily set it up to move with both.

Edit.....with 4 outputs...you could control the dish from up to 4 stb's.

do not know if it passes diseqc 1.2 movement commands...will test and post.

does RS still have these? are they online, or at your local store?

They were in store and on sale for ninety nine cents. Couldnt help myself. They are also online but 32.99 there. Catalog number 16-985. They do pass diseqc 1.2 and 22hz as well. I have 4 receivers now that control my dish. Two i only use occasionally. The other two i use everyday. To avoid diseqc backfeed i put one on a 1x4 committed and one on a 1x8 uncommitted. That way their commands couldnt change the others switch.

Edit on the box it says 16-2571.

This is very interesting.

The possibilities are interesting. Radio shack came out with these a loooooooong time ago...mid 90s i think. They were designed for the "new" dtv single-- dual output lnb. That allowed you to run four receivers instead of two....no dvrs back then. I used one back then and actually still had it until last year. Was the first multiswitch i used for fta...but needed 8 outputs and 4 inputs and it kept changing diseqc ports for other receivers. Finally it rusted real bad and it had to go. Had forgot about it until i was in radio shack looking for something else two months ago...saw the ninety nine cents sign and said wow ill take the five you have. Then yesterday it dawned on me when having to go upstairs to move ku dish...that it passed diseqc commands. Wondered if it would pass usals...it did. I only run the four recevers i want to move it with through it...two of those i don't really use. The other six i run through a zinwell which prevents the backfeed.

ebay has a ton of them for cheap..type radio shack multiswitch in.

Great stuff mountaineer, I might have to get me a couple of them.

Thanks

edit: make that ordered a couple of them.

Great post - thanks for the info mountaineer!

I had been wondering how this could be done. I have the traxis upstairs and want to have another box or 2 downstairs.. Now this can be done

Thanks for the find and info Mountaineer

I checked RS site model #16 985 was 32.99.  Ebay 1.99 to 19.99

Will check local store in person

They look the same and may be the same...but the one I have is :

Edit on the box it says 16-2571.

Hopefully it will work for you.  I went back to that store a month later...they had restocked and were  MUUUUUUUUUCH higher. Around what their website says.

If you can get the 16-2571 I would...I know it works. The
16-985 is described the same but looks different. I'd definitely keep the receipt if all they have is the 16-985. It may block the usals and diseqc commands....or it could even be better and not backfeed them. I assume that is why the 16-2571's were on sale....cleaning out old stock for newer models.

this is the 16-985 that I don't know if it works or not.
RadioShack® Satellite Passive Multi-Switch

This is the 16-2571 that I know works

Good info, Yes I see that and EB has the ones you have

when first installing and testing, I would for precautionary measures turn the other receiver off. With the backfeed diseqc  problem, although with this switch I'm not experiencing it as bad if at all this time,   I'd be cautious at first. The only problem I have run into is that if both stbs are tuned through their diseqc switch to the motor it may not move.

for instance upstairs tuned to motorized dish through setting 1 of diseqc switch. Go down stairs  and tune it on the stb there through different diseqc switch...watching the same sat not a problem.....go to move dish and it won't move. Go back upstairs and change the upstairs  and tune it to diseqc 2 Cband or other ...and  the downstairs stb will then move the dish. This is probably unique to my system since I also send 22 on/off through the same diseqc switch and multiswitches. This may be the backfeed problem manifesting itself.

But with other stb(s) either off or tuned to a different diseqc setting other than ku motorized dish... it moves great no matter which stb I use.

Right now I move it with 3 receivers. Openbox s10 upstairs, downstairs and prof 7500 upstairs.
With any two receivers off or tuned to another diseqc setting other than ku motorized... I can move it with any of the receivers....after moving I can tune all three to that dish and watch any program on it V or H because the moving has been done.

Also sometimes when using a diseqc switch...you'll need to tune the sat the dish is on...then move it. Sometimes the usals or move command will come before the diseqc switch change command and not go to the motor. For instance I'm watching cband on diseqc switch 1...ku motor is on diseqc 2. I go to move the motor from K-G19 to K-G3c. It doesn't move. If I go to K-G19 where the dish is...then move to K-g3c it works fine. If you are already on that diseqc setting then of course the dish will move.

My equipment is working it fine...except for the above mentioned glitch..which can be expected. But everyone has different receivers, switches, and systems. Cautious testing would be wise. Last thing you want to do is lose a receiver.

Also I have only tested this running through diseqc ports. I have not tested running receivers directly to multiswitch... I need diseqc switches for stationary, cband, and motorized ku dishes. I assume it will work the same without the diseqc switches maybe even without the small glitches...but again maybe not..... cautious testing is what i would do. It is your system and as with anything suggested or ideas put out....it is your decision to use or not use... not responsible for blown diseqc  or multiswitches or worse fried receivers.

Right now I'm using the prof to move it. The upstairs S10 is tuned to a different diseqc setting to Cband. Prof moves the Ku dish fine. Just tuned same sat with S10 and everything is fine with both tuned to it. Tuned prof to Cband everything fine. Used S10 to move KU dish to K-G 3c everything is fine. Just tuned prof to K-G3 C and everything is fine. S10 downstairs is off.

I'm very pleased with how it is working. Just want to put out the caution flag for those that may be interested in trying this.

Makes the running up and downstairs a thing of the past...as long as other receivers are either off or tuned to another diseqc setting when moving the dish.

i was very cautious in my testing over the past two days. That is why the info is being posted over several posts. I treasure my receivers and do not want to replace my ku motor. I will continue to test, but i have thrown everything I know at it and any hiccups are posted above...but I do not expect to find anything else
Famous last words I know. Hopefully if you try it you will find it works well for you.

When I got up this morning I had one more thought. Power.

Many of todays stbs are run at a minimal power output. To then put an extra layer of running a motor AFTER a multiswitch and or a diseqc switch may cause some receivers problems or even fry the tuner. I would only run the motor of off the 18 V side of the multiswitch (have to tune H channels to get dish to move). I would also look into powering the motor with some outside source. Maybe a wall wart(ha ha) or old dish network receiver run through one of the ports to supply 18 V to the motor at all times. I have not tried this and will try to test it this week. if someone else tries this please post.
Also I don't know if I would use this setup if I was a heavy scanner...for the reasons listed above.
i put this idea up here as a way to occasionally move the dish from another receiver. I have no idea how it will hold up under constant movement like wildfeed scanning multiple sats. more of a way to just move dish when a feed is posted or to watch another program without having to go upstairs, downstairs, to another room...etc.
I have posted these cautions only to carefully cover the negatives that may pop up. Hopefully with some of us working on this we can come up with a very solid way of using it that is as healthy for receivers as we can make it.
