Howdy from SW Oklahoma... I have a leaking cap on the power supply of my coolsat 8100. If I had a schematic, i could find the value and replace it. Anybody have a lead on a diagram? dave

I hate to ask the obvious question but, did you look to see if the value is on the component? I have no schematic...sry.

. I gave it a cursury look and didn't see any markings. I'll get the magnifying glass out and take a closer look. Thanks for the reply. Dave

If it's an electrolytic and it has the cover still on it then it should have the value, working voltage and polarity...

AC is correct on the electrolytics and they are marked, confirmed with my unit. I'd like to see a pic of the problem part. Is the unit still op? Could it be an MOV and not a cap or for sure a cap.

ind224.... Thanks for the info. I have three that I suspect. They are covered with a beige colored stuff so it's hard to read the specs. I clipped the middle one out and used an exacto knife to scrape off the goop. I don't know which of the three was leaking so I'll probably replace all three. What is an MOV?

ind224, I have used the magnifying class but with my ancient eyes, can't read the markings accurately and wouldn't understand what they meant anyway. If you have an opportunity, can you look at your unit and tell me the values for C8, C7 and C10. Those are the three that at covered with something. Dave

Dave, An MOV(metal oxide varistor) is a surge protector. That goop you scrapped off sounds like it might be hot wax that binds the top of the three caps together for shipping purposes. Go to the link below and enlarge the picture. You'll see the glue on top of the caps.http://www.partshere.com/online/detail.asp?partno=C8099-67015

If it is an electrolytic capacitor, It is incased in an aluminum can and surrounded by shrink wrap with the top left exposed. It will have an engineered weak section exposed..If the top of one or more looks to be pushed upwards as opposed to being flat on top, I would suspect it. The shrink will have markings..Most important are polarity, microfarad (MFD), and voltage. The polarity is usually a different color band on one side of the cap on the shrink with either a + or a - in it. you can substitute close MFD values or a cap with a little more working voltage...polarity is critical...Hope this helps...

Perhaps we should start over and ask was the Coolsat 8100 working before the part was clipped out or the cover was removed? True that often parts are glued together to prevent the small wire leads from breaking off while in shipping or falling off a table or shelf. It does seem that a capacitor may be a part that sometimes will fail but so can other parts. If that was just wax or glue holding the three caps in place then well like I have seen before on the back side of tv sets----no user serviceable parts are inside so just never take the cover off. If one does open and start cutting out parts well I guess the device will have problems then. So what were the problems before the cover was first removed and a part was cut out?

Dave I have seen some posting on some other site pertaining to power supply (capacitor) issue on 8000/8100 units and was wondering if you have a digital meter with capacitor testing capability were you could remove the cap and measure it off board i have ran in to this in past on some other electronic units made in Germany and boy do they love to not print values on the caps ... LoL you could pickup a cheapo one from harbor freight tools for about 20.00 on sale and it is accurate enough for what you are doing. hope this help cheers bogie Edit Btw you can always tell what leg is the negative by looking on the pc board the negative is normally common to lots of other components. you see the trace going to any other capacitor leg that is common with the leg of this particular one and that would be the negative side

bogie..... thanks for the help. i have a harbor freight just a few blocks away. I noticed that the cap I clipped has the - stripe that corresponds to the black half moon on the board. That one is a can't miss to put back right.

I do not have a Coolsat 8100 but I opened a Coolsat 7000. There is no less than 42 electrolytics caps total with 13 just on the power supply board. My caps all claim Sam Young and all clearly show the values of voltage and capacity. Only the one largest on the power supply board show a glue holding it onto the board. The power supply connector shows 23V 12V 8V 5V 3.3V going to the receiver tuner card. I would guess a Coolsat 8100 looks a bit different inside. I opened up a Coolsat 6000 and found 40 electrolytic caps with 12 on the power supply. Did not see any glue or wax in this unit. The caps are all well marked and easy to read values. Power supply board says 22V 12V 7.5V 5V twice and 3.3 v. Caps have a different brand name from what was in the 7000 unit. Because neither of these units "will not do HD" I would never waste any time to attempt a repair. Probably paid $20-$25 each used many years ago. A lot of work to unsolder and replace 40 caps if just wishing that was the problem. One should measure all the power supply voltages and if all are good perhaps the caps are to. Does the unit in question give a monitor display and show the menu screens?

I see a Coolsat 8000 just sold for $17.50 on E Bay. Less than a Harbor Freight test meter costs.

I've been checking ebay every day. I suspect that sale was for a remote. But, keep looking for me.
