I remember when my HD+ was new doing a lot of reading here, but that was a very long time ago, and I remember seeing nothing about this:

Using whatever firmware it is that reports as 0.9.5402, if /DATA/hdb1/recordfile/ has 300 files with names that end in .ts, then it reports that it will not make a new recording, warning "Please delete unused files...(Maximum of 300 contents can be saved)". Files with any other names are not counted. Renaming (via ftp or remote login) any number of files required to bring count of those ending in .ts down to 299 or less restores ability to record, regardless how much HD space is used, or available. Recent (recordable) state:

$ df -h /DATA/hdb1/recordfile
Filesystem                Size      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb1                 1.2T      1.1T     46.4G  96% /DATA/hdb1
$ df -m /DATA/hdb1/recordfile
Filesystem           1M-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb1              1248378   1188246     47549  96% /DATA/hdb1
$ df -k /DATA/hdb1/recordfile
Filesystem           1k-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb1            1278339488 1216764056  48690524  96% /DATA/hdb1
$ ls -l /DATA/hdb1/recordfile/*.ts | wc -l
    295
$ ls -l /DATA/hdb1/recordfile/*ts | wc -l
    302

From this point I made new short recordings until the refusal returned. When I checked how many there actually were, I got this:

$ ls -l /DATA/hdb1/recordfile/*.ts | wc -l
    301

Was this limitation ever encountered or reported by anyone here, or observed in any manual?

Yes, I encountered on my Elite several years ago.
I created a new folder and moved recordings to that.
Actually, I have several folders for recordings i.e. gunsmoke, perry mason, etc

How exactly do you play from those folders? I created a subfolder in /DATA/hdb1/recordfile, moved some record files into it, and the HD+ won't even acknowledge the presence of the subfolder, even after reboot. For now, I've created subfolders in /DATA/hdb1, moved all recordings into them, then symlink to recordfile whichever I need to show up in the play recording menu. That's going to be no small inconvenience, but at least it will work around the 300 limit.

No, using the detail menu will not access anything other than recordfile. You can use the "Movies" selection from the main menu to navigate to any of the folders on the system. Your mileage may vary on whether it will actually play the file. It is a pain. I've created bash scripts to rename and move shows to other folders.

None of my recordings will play from the Play Video menu, "not supported", if in /DATA/hdb1/recordfile or in a subdir of it, and the Play Video menu won't provide access to the dirs I created in /DATA/hdb1.

It is just most important to share the find.
