...... So I pulled out the Coolsat again to give it another shot and that's why i started this thread. ....  This time I am alot more satisfied with it as I can now get the channels on AMC18 thanks to BLUzEE (or most of the one's I wanted anyway; it still has a problem with 3920 V and gettin those channels) and I'll just have to get a little bit better at renaming channels and finding some logical way of grouping them since sorting by sid which I usually do or by alphabet is not that good.  ......

...... BTW, don't know much about DIAMOND; if it is older receiver like my Viewsat Pro, it probably don't do S2 and today that is a necessary feature.  I have about 4 or 5 good receivers which I have retired becuase they can't do S2.

Re Diamond, it may be a bit older than the CS, but it does do S2, and like the CS also does OTA ATSC.  It records to HDD also, but unfortunately mine has pirate firmware on it that keeps it from recording high bitrate HD.  It records medium bitrate HD and OTA HD fine though.  I do most of my recording on computer anyway, so I don't miss the recording, except for times when I've wanted to record 2 or 3 things at the same time.

Re the channel sorting on the CS,  I think I mentioned above, that I would hit the favorite button and get a list of satellites, and when you select one and get a list of channels, you could use the blue button to toggle between 4 or 5 functions, one of which is a MOVE function.  This would allow you to select one of the channels and move it up or down in the list so that it would be wherever you wanted. And the blue button could also take you to a rename function to allow you to rename it also.  I can't remember past that, but I think that these functions were much more useful when I'd select channels to put in a FAVORITES list, then there would be fewer channels to deal with when moving and renaming.   It's a bit of an effort to accomplish, but once you set it up, it's a handy way to arrange your channels.  I think I mixed sat and OTA channels too, but it's been so long that I can't remember for sure.

I just do a sort by transponder after the scan then hit the fav button and select the satellite the dish is pointed at.  Most sats don't have a whole lot of FTA channels so once you break it down by satellite the list is not very bad to scroll through.

The 8000 doesn't record. I record with a computer and PCI card. I don't think there is an STB that can work as well for recording as a computer.   The computer will play a lot of stuff the STBs can't too.  Would probably be better to just replace the coolsat with the computer. I end up using the computer to watch a lot of stuff any way.

I have toyed with the idea of adding an entertainment center PC but until I do that I have to stay with the STB.

Thanks for the tips on using the FAV's for channel sorting.  I just started experimenting with that today so we'll see how that goes.  I'm looking forward to putting it up to it's best potential and see how she does compared to the others.  So far I'll give it a B- mainly cause of the channel limitations, other than that she is performing well.

I again want to thank all the posters who took the time to help out with their postings.

What kinda PCI cards are available for S2 and recording?  I'm getting curious now.

The Prof cards that Rick sells work really well. I have one as do many in here. Some others have some of the new series TBS cards.  The new ones are pretty good from reports I've heard. The older models I wouldn't touch.  DvbWorld cards are junk. I have one. Read the Crazycat stuff, I think he mentions a couple other cards that work OK.

I've yet to find HTPC software that I really like for use with satellite.   Lately I've been thinking what I should do is just add a different desktop wall for each satellite. Each wall would have icons on the desktop to tune the channels on that satellite.  If I can figure out how to setup mplayer to use multiple channels.conf files then once you start playing one channel I think you can just use hotkeys to flip through the channels for that sat. Each wall would use it's own channels.conf file containing  only channels for that sat.   It would be simple enough that anyone could work it, play everything and you can sort any way you like.

This would probably only work in Linux.

I appreciate all of that info, but to me it's like you're talking in GREEK.  I don't understand any of it.  Think I'll stick with something I know a little better like a STB.  thanks again bluzee and good luck with your pci cards.

Yah, I'm just thinking out loud....

Be nice if there was an STB that just scanned and played all the feeds properly, recorded stuff with out glitches and so on but I don't see that ever happening.

Fellow Members, your posts are welcome here! Do not worry about posting everything perfect. Different receivers and LNB's will give you different Frequencies and Symbol Rates. Some set top boxes, PCI cards and USB receivers, Do Not Require all of the same information that others may need. It is not Required to post everything that others may need to tune in a feed. It is just most important to share the find. We can always adjust the Frequency and Symbol Rates and try the various Modulations and FEC's on our own receivers until we get a lock and then give a polite reply with what works for your receiver, as that information might help others as well. We all appreciate the efforts and energy of the Posters!
