Hello all, I sometimes need to realign my dish or some friend's dish and I always need to carry a tuner and a monitor on the roof.
I don't need it as often to buy a satellite pointing equipment so this is the idea:
I have an unused skystar usb device and I was wondering if it's possible to make a little arduino sketch that simply set the tuner to a given frequency and display strenght and quality on a 16x2 lcd.

No problem for the display part...the hard part is to interface arduino and usb skystar.
Maybe someone have a good idea?

Of course if arduino and skystar could interact it would be possible to send also disecq command, motor command and so on...but this could be the rest of the story.

Massimo.

I searched two minutes on internet and discover that arduino can't be a host directly but it needs a new device called Arduino USB Host Shield.
In this way it's possible to connect a usb device....studying continues...

Sure its possible, but honestly incredibly complicated. If you wanted todo something simpler I would get a RPi zero and a small lcd and it would be much much so much simpler. A RPi zero is $5 and a 16x2 already setup for RPi is $9

Drivers are already written, a simple application is all you'd need to write, and honestly its not that complicated. Writing the drivers is the hard part, writing the drivers by bit banging usb is ALOT harder (ie arduino)

Hey...nice idea....
It would really be very easy...
Thank you I didn't think to this possibility. I'll try as soon as possible.

Hi all!
So, I did some experiment today and connect a 16x2 lcd to a raspberry 2 I have.
I made a very simple program in C, just for testing that everything works and it's all ok.
I also tried to connect a rotating encoder because I'd like to use it as input device.
It worked too.

Now I downloaded the tune-s2 program from updatelee. For now I will simply try to pipe quality and signal to lcd display. This is a hard trick for me...but I'll try and let you know soon.

Bye
Max.

this sounds like a cool project..do you plan on making it work for any tuner or will it only work for skystar?

would love to put my pi to some use again.

nevertheless please keep us updated on your progress.  thanks!

Hello,
I see that you have the HDMI cable connected to the PI
You use tune-s2 with which Skystar device?
Because i spent a lot of time to make the USB DVB-S version to work but failed.
The USB HD works fine though.
Waiting for the quality and signal output results [smile]

Hello, I used this image from Darksky. It's a great piece of software and both my hd skystar than my old usb skystar worked at the first try.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-hVZ4SWSiuKMVlmblFFRG5YOU0/view?usp=sharing

This evening I got signal and stenght displayed on my lcd but for the moment I still send command thru normal keyboard and monitor. This is the reason for HDMI cable.
Now I need to add an external kind of control (maybe a rotating encoder) and after try everything with battery power. Road is still long and dirty ;-) ;-)

Good night from Italy,
Massimo.

Hello Area21, no sorry, it's not my device.
I am using this device (Skystar USB), containing the  STV0299 demodulator.
It's the first listed in the link you attached.
Bye
Max.

Hello forum!
Altough I had been very busy with work this week I took some time to go forward in my project.
Now I correctly view signal, snr and ber on my lcd.
I see that signal is in percentual format while snr and ber are numeric values.
I'd like to show signal and snr as two growing bars in my lcd.
Showing signal is an easy task but for snr I need a maximum value for percent calculation.
What's the highest value snr can assume?
Of course ber displaying is easy too...the lower is the better.
Thank you
Max.
