When you get to the updates
On a prompt mine said it was outdated and asked if I still wanted to update, it might cause a failure, said would be better to do an update install from USB, which has a new update almost everyday that you would need to download for install
I think it was 96 updates, or in that neighborhood
I went ahead and updated from it/Octagon online, for me it went OK with no failures

I'm used to only updating firmware when things stop working, but it would be nice to get things working, so I may have to try that.

I just ran into what seems to be a serious flaw in whatever version I have in here now.
As I said, I loaded the NASA channel on g13 by setting it to diseqC-1.1 port 2.  Then I decided to try the PBS channels on AMC21, which I have on a fixed dish on switch port 5.  Loaded the 12180 and 12145 and 12155 transponders.  That went well, and played OK.  Then I tried to go back to NASA, but they didnt show up in the guide.  Not only that, when I tried to re-load them, the configuration for G13 had been changed to switch port 5.  When I changed it back to 2, still no channels loaded, so I had to re-scan, which then erased all my settings for AMC-21.

So basically, I am only able to scan and save one sat and one polarity at a time, because when I save configurations for another sat or polarity, then it erases what I had saved for the other sat.

I don't know if entering all the info via a channel editor would help with this or not, but it sure seems like a serious bug if saving configuration for one sat wipes out the configuration for another sat.  On the other hand, this must not be happening on other people's receivers, so I must have old firmware.
I really hate to have to keep updating things, but I guess I have no choice.

wejones are you changing the lnb# for various sats?..If not it will save the last sat you set in advanced mode.example..Here I am using my Octagon to move around a Cband dish so for this every single sat that I have progammed in is lnb1 which has the same lnb settings,Diseqc settings etc.The only thing I change is the position # for each sat.

Now for various other sats that are fixed dishes they have there own lnb# as each is on various ports of the Diseqc switch. Are you doing it this way?If not it could be the cause of your issues.

As far as adding or deleting sats I use Filezilla and grab the sat xml file from the Octagon and save in a folder then use notepad or wordpad to do all my editing then shoot it back to the Octagon.Hope this helps.

Thanks for replying. Basically I will eventually have 4 different LNBs for all sats on my BUD, since I have a horizontal and vertical LNB for both C and Ku, plus I have a separate LNBF for AMC-21.
So if I understand what you're saying, even with the newer firmware, it's not possible for me to define more than one satellite.
However, I'm thinking that perhaps with newer firmware I could define 5 different fake satellites, say:

 Cband-H   port 1
 Cband-V   port 2
Kuband-H  port 3
Kuband-V  port 4
AMC-21     port 5

Then save ALL horizontal transponders scanned on C-band on that first port, regardless of what sat they were scanned on.
I cannot do this on my current firmware, because it completely destroyed the configuration on G13 when I saved my AMC-21 configuration, and visa-versa.  The only other option I can think of is to save EVERYTHING on one satellite, and then go in and change the switch configuration when I want to watch any channel.
That's somewhat similar to what I'm doing on my Azbox, ie I send the dish to a sat via my Monty-55, and then go to the satellite setup and change the switch position to get the right band and polarity. But the Octagon firmware I have now won't let me do even that.

But I think that first I have to update the firmware.  You recommended openeight I think. I may try that.
Good to know that you can edit the files via notepad.  I may play around with that first.

Thanks.

Oh I see what ur doing now wejones.you can swap all images you want with these E2 receivers and as long as you save the sat xml file it can be used with any image ( least the ones I tried ) or any E2 based receiver for that matter.I actually loaded my sat xml file from my Vu to the Octagon.

This is another nice thing about Enigma 2 receivers.

@ wejones
you should use the filezilla that hockeynut mentioned or the Dreamset or DreamboxEdit that has also been mentioned

I use the same sat xml and lamedb file for AZBoxME, Icecrypt, WETEK microSD, and now Octagon
you could build a sat list like so:
Octagon sat list.jpg

Hopefully.  But I'm guessing that my current version of the firmware needs to be updated first.

I've downloaded 3 or 4 versions that you gave the links to above, but I won't have a chance to play with it for another day.

Thanks.

Had to deal with furnace installation, just getting back to this.
Yesterday, when I responded to this, I didn't understand what you meant by "lnb#".  I thought you were referring to the diseqC port #, but I now see there is an lnb# in the setup menus.
So I tried again, this time defining G13 as lnb1 and AMC21 as LNB5, designating each with the proper port number to specify that lnb.  Then I saved channels on both, hoping that all channels would show up in the"guide".  However only the last sat scanned shows up in the guide.
Is there some way to change satellites and see the guide from the previously scanned satellite?

Re grabbing the xml file, I logged onto the Octagon via both ssh and ftp.   I found a file called satellites.xml in the /share directory.  I played around with it a bit, and I think I was able to edit it.
However after I put the edited file back in the Octagon, I noticed that there are several other copies of satellites.xml in the Octagon, so I'm wondering if I edited the right one, or if perhaps the other ones are just backup files in case of corruption?
I was hoping to find a channel list in xml format, but I couldn't find one.
I'm still working with my out-dated firmware, which I found to be version 5.3, which is from Dec 2016.  I think I'm going to stop playing with the old version now, and switch to a newer one.

EDIT:  Also, what does it mean when the Octagon asks if you want to zap back to service before  doing something?

When I first started seeing the ZAP thing, my thoughts were:
delete, destroy, obliterate, get rid of, etc, etc...
But now, I think it means:
go back, return, exit, etc, etc...

I really don't know?
Hope someone else does..!!!

@wejones.Have you tried while watching a ch hitting the up or down arrow key and then it will give you 4 colored options on bottom of screen?..Hit the green button ( extended ) it should show you all of your services.

adding to this
if you hit the < or > button on either side of the 0 button
either one will bring up the most recent channels you've been on
depending which button you used it will highlight the channel to it's west or east?
then you can use up or down buttons to choose and pick one of those channels

Yes, I've done that, and it gives me all the services on the satellite that I last scanned, but not on the other satellite that I previously scanned.  I was hoping that there might be a way to switch satellites to see the channels scanned in there, but perhaps it isn't possible with the 5.3 firmware I have in there now.
Tomorrow morning, I think I'll put in one of the more recent versions, and maybe that will work better for me.

thanks.

EDIT:  SORRY, as usual, I only read HALF of your sentence above.  I had previously hit the arrow buttons to get the list of the last scanned sat, but I just now finished reading your post and noticed the 2nd half about the button at the bottom.  DUHHH

Just tried that, and it worked.
Great.  I think that solves all my problems. Via the editing of the XML files, I should be able to create separate sat configurations for my 5 different LNBs, and this will give me everything I've scanned.

THANKS

Well, I just upgraded my firmware from version 5.3 to 6.1, and now I get the menu options that people are describing.  Recordings work now, and other things work as people describe.
So now I'm on the same boat as everyone else.

THANKS.

Oh yes.... it did take me a while to figure out how to do the upgrade.  Basically, I couldn't find the power button on the front panel.  I kept trying to flip down the front like you do for the USB plug, until I pulled out the little manual sheet that came with the thing, and saw a picture of the front, with the power symbol at far left.   DUHHH

Anyway, now, after I've used it for a day, and have the new firmware, I really like this receiver.

If you dont direct the "box" as to where you want it to record...... it will give an error. Think of it as saving a file on a computer...have to tell it where it is to be saved or it wont save it.[smile]

should have 3 options to set:
timer recording
instant recording
timeshift recordings

you must designate where each one will record to

Also look over the rest of Setup page and see if you need to change anything else for your needs

Just to be clear, I'm just using the firmware that came with the receiver, while people are talking about Enigma-2 and E2.  I thought the Octagon had OpenATV firmware, or is that the same thing?
But anyway, If I hit SETUP, there is no Recordings & Timeshift option.
The entire list is:
Video, Audio, Usage&GUI, EPG, Service Searching, Common interface, Parental control, Software management, and System. I've looked in most of those, and don't find anything related to formatting or designating where recordings should go.
Is it possible that I needed to load one of the plugins to get the extra menu items?

Other than that, I'm thinking that I may have to format it in my RPi before it can record.
When I tried to initialize the hard disk, it DID recognize the hard drive, and detected the capacity, but apparently wasn't able to format it.  It's a rather old hard drive with windows NTFS format. I assumed that the Octagon could reformat in one of the Linux formats, but maybe not, and maybe I don't get those menu items until it is formatted.

The firmware for the Octagon is E2 or Enigma2, so yes it's the same thing
I believe other firmware would be Linux firmware and I don't think can be loaded inside this box?
Since I still am playing around with original firmware, 5.3. As seen here:
test-2.jpg
and as you can see what the screen should show you for Recordings & Timeshift here:
test-1.jpg
I'm inclined to believe you are right about the formatting?

Edit:

The above in RED was edited
Also thinking about the Recordings & Timeshift
I just got my 1T SSD yesterday
and the Recordings & Timeshift were already seen in my box
So maybe it's not a Format Issue?
I'm at a loss for your problem, but I would still try a format to see?
