I bricked my s10 and it would only show "ON" and not boot. I unbricked it and it is working fine now. If this happens to anyone with an S9 or S10 let me know and I may be able to help.

My question is "what did you do to brick it"?

Mountain,

This would be a fine opportunity for you to write a step by step instructions for recovery and post it here.

I loaded new firmware onto the s10 and that went fine. Loaded my sat list and the stb shutoff or tried to reboot before it should have...and wham absolutely nothing. Tried everything .... nothing. Display said on...no picture menu nothing. I was very worried. Cussed myself for messing up a  good thing.
Searched forever and found some stuff and did the following using what I read;
1. STB off.
2. Null modem cable attached to desktop computer and to STB.
3. Downloaded S9 loader program to computer.
4. Opened loader....set the correct port for STB.
5. Selected firmware to load.
6. CHECKED BOOTLOADER BOX
7. Clicked next and immediately turned on STB.
8. Loader loaded then boot and firmware...took about 3-5 mins.
9. STB rebooted - ready to add channel list.
I stopped sweating.
I got this from 2 sites...double checked them against each other and went to work.
Honestly the hardest part was finding a null modem cable. If you want the site that helped the most I'll send it to you. Those steps were a lifesaver. Also you may have to do the steps  several times if it does not work the first time. I was fortunate and it worked first time.
I think this will work for other stbs as well.
I hope you guys never have to do this, nor have to clean drawers.from that really bad feeling  that stuff went really bad.

I've learned a ton from you guys and I can't thank you all enough. Top notch people at this site!!!! I hope nobody has to learn this from me, although from reading around this isn't uncommon for S10.
Your welcome PIXL.

Thanks for the informative post, I hold my breath every time I flash the S9- it acts differently with each new load of firmware. Keeping my fingers crossed!

This is exactly the way you do it on a Viewsat and I suppose on other boxes also.  The power on sends the command to the computer to send the FW.  So many people turn the box on and try to find "Go" or hit "Next" and nothing happens.

Hit next and it is cocked, loaded and ready to fire when you power on the box.

I didn't know if you should check boot loader or not.  Makes sense, won't boot so install the boot loader.

Thanks for the info.

I came home tonight to find my S9 dead!  Put new FW in it the day before and played with it all day....so, hmmm...

Pulled it out, it had beer spilled in it...wife and I went out to eat and daughter-in-law was here.  Claims she didn't do it but she has a 2 year old.

Tested all voltages, looks good.  It will flash and says success.  Still stuck with "On" on the display.  I flashed with several flashers and FW's and one caused it to say on, boot, then -- on the display.  So, I can get it to act different, meaning it is taking a flash.  It was not much beer...but the box was on...spilled right on a RAM chip (hynix).

I have been working on it for several hours...Any ideas?

I know, screwed the RAM, and me outta $140!

Still open to ideas as it has been a solid box with no bad flashes and seems like it takes a flash.  The on (4-5 secs), boot (1-2 secs), then -- (never goes away) has been reported and I tried what they did...no good.  The boot makes me think it is in the main code...

UPDATE:  What the heck...I flashed it to the new Pansat 9500HDX and guess what?

It comes on and says on and that is it.  But a picture fades in, or should I say the menu fades in as the background fades out!!!!

I'll post pics.  The FW is useless but it is alive, though crippled it may be, but it is the first life I have seen!  No remote and buttons on front do not work either.

WOW!  Gonna try S9 FW now!

Ok, do I have this right? You flashed Pansat FW into the S-10 and it partially booted?
As for beer on the circuit board, I would pull the board completely out, scrub both sides with isoprol alcohol and a tooth brush. Set it out in the sun to dry  for a day. It might come back to life if your FW still can be corrected.

Yep Pixl, I flashed PS FW to my S9!  What did I have to loose?  Got the S9 loaded and to boot once...and froze.  The PS will load over and over...I think the mem chip is bad from the beer while powered on.  The PS maincode is located at a different address than the S9, so maybe it is running in good memory.

I'll post back, and a good box may run the PS FW.  Even if I get it going...I'm still gonna try the PS FW again...

The cool 3d text in the pic is my shaky hand!  It is cool how the PS fades in though...trying to stay on how to fix an openbox.

OK, you guys can laugh and take it for what it is worth! I told my wife sorry for staying up all night and showed her how the PS FW let me know it was not dead...yes, I loaded the PS FW again then the S9 and went to get coffee. It now shows NoCH with S9 FW!

Have not touched it...will let ya know. It is 7-31-11 S9 FW.
