Update: my double-e guy ran thru all the approaches but couldn’t log on to the router page. He was aware of what’s been posted here, esp the need to keep the IP addresses different. DHCP of course. My router defied the access. It delivered the numbers that made sense but not the security configs. So he swapped it out with his spare single-band Netgear N300 and set up the protections. Not as fast as my N600 but a whole lot more secure. He’ll run the detailed diagnostics in his shop. My replacement Linksys is due in tomorrow. I’d rather have the old unit back but at least I can move on to other projects.

Will let you know.

The Linksys order was cancelled due to no more inventory from that seller. Amazon had a replacement which I took. Same price, $32. It arrived today and connected real easy, didn’t even need the ethernet. I set the networks & passwords to what I used to have. My devices connected automatically. Both this Linksys and the old Netgear have similar specs & function, this new one at one-third the price. My speed tests show that the Linksys isn’t quite as fast as the Netgear N600 but matches my buddy’s N300. And as before, I got better speeds as the device settled into its environment. What remains is seeing whether it’s as reliable (until the failure!).

BTW what are the odds of my friend resurrecting the old Netgear? The factory reset didn’t help. Is there a firmware upgrade that might work? Or could this be something in the hardware? Thanks.

edit: I note that the price I paid was an Amazon Prime discount. I signed up for it to get the video access but the 2-day shipping and this preferred-pricing is an added benefit. Without it I’d be paying something similar as the old Netgear N600. I don’t want to leave the wrong impression here.

For any consumer electronics device with suspected hardware problems, first place I would go is
Power Supply, and or look for signs of Bad caps. Both can cause all sorts of flakey unpredictable problems. Your EE dude should know all that though.

Thanks for that. He’s a busy guy. Any tips I can pass along would make his spare time go better.

You may be able to install new factory firmware by tftp. Here is a link from openwrt. Just change the name to the factory image file name instead of their image file name. Start where it says this under INSTALLATION:

OEM installation using the TFTP method (recommended)

Thanks for that, DarkSky. I’ll pass it along. He digs this stuff. If he can make the router fully-functional I’ll be giving it to him. It’s a nice device. The Linksys is working great for me. By using the same passwords it connects to all my peripherals, incl the AZ Box for its time setting. The Linksys negative reviews seem related to the LAN ports. Less of a concern for me. I note that Amazon has been slowly raising its price, as is their marketing approach. I’m happy with what I paid.

My EE buddy reports he’s given up hope for getting the router back to full-function:

the Netgear N600 still won’t access the admin page.
I did the 30/30/30 reset a few times and still no success.
So its not good to use anymore. Or only if someones needs a basic router and does not need to get into the admin pages to make any changes.

So I guess this closes the matter. Thanks for all your advice.

Fellow Members, your posts are welcome here! Do not worry about posting everything perfect. Different receivers and LNB's will give you different Frequencies and Symbol Rates. Some set top boxes, PCI cards and USB receivers, Do Not Require all of the same information that others may need. It is not Required to post everything that others may need to tune in a feed. It is just most important to share the find. We can always adjust the Frequency and Symbol Rates and try the various Modulations and FEC's on our own receivers until we get a lock and then give a polite reply with what works for your receiver, as that information might help others as well. We all appreciate the efforts and energy of the Posters!
