thanks. so it does level off. Great to know. it seems to use about 100MB for the buffers (comparing buff/swap usage during recording and after.)

It would be interesting to see what mountaineers stripped down image shows.
and what he sees using a fully loaded image where the recording aborted after 1 min..

It is recording  now... and the buffer has gone from 400 or so up to almost 2400 now and growing by about 20-25 per step.
Now at 3500 and growing at same rate.

EDIT: yes. this is great. it hasn't run out of memory. you said you removed stuff from the image. (or you used differnt image what fell over after a minute recording. if we can do same there.. I'd expect memory to run out.
and then adding swap (just for testing if that would help the recording going) then we know the system just hasn't enough mem to record such stream. and we look whether to shrink mem use of image or limit mem use of the buffers.

thanks. different kernel shows free differntly.. interesting.

i was just to suggest to run this
while true; do vmstat; sleep 5; done
vmstat shows buffers and cache seperately . while free combines them.

procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system-- ------cpu-----
r  b   swpd   free   buff  cache   si   so    bi    bo   in   cs us sy id wa st
 2  0      0  98232   2168  65932    0    0     9     0 2059 7474 13 43 43  0  0

need to see what determines the size here. prob the number of buffers. I can see if i can do a build with smalelr number of buffer and see if that help.

I think I found out what was causing my spinners and isues...this image cant have finished timers in its timer list. Got rid of them  and recording fine. I may try to load back easy media and see what happens.

Ok I loaded back in easy media. Cleared timers set up new one and it started just fine and recorded just fine  until color bars on screen suddenly went out to begin broadcast of news...recording stopped. Here is a picture of when it happened.

and this is where starting enigma2 from telnet come handy, you can get an idea what is going on from the debug log..

init 4
enigma2

or pipe the output into a file instead of showing in telnet

enigma2 > /tmp/e2log.txt 2>&1

Could the whole issue of premature recording stoppage be that the #1 ( idiotic default) record button result of "stop after current event", or #3 recording duration's default length, is somehow substituted randomly for the only option that makes sense to me as a default, "indefinitely", something in the data stream indicating a falsely interpreted end of event, or a false duration termination?

i wonder whether switching on debug log via the system log settings will get us the recording stoppage errors..
worth a try  without having to start from cmd line..

and then does the failure always look like this

13:53:34.4219 [   ] base/filepush.cpp:439 stop [eFilePushThreadRecorder] stopping thread.
13:53:34.4305 [ E ] base/filepush.cpp:398 thread [eFilePushThreadRecorder] *read error* (Bad file descriptor) - aborting thread because i don't know what else to do.
13:53:34.4310 [   ] dvb/demux.cpp:602 flush [eDVBRecordFileThread] waiting for aio to complete
13:53:34.4312 [   ] dvb/demux.cpp:471 wait [eDVBRecordFileThread] Waiting for I/O to complete

Ok slowly working thru the issues so I can get you the info you need.

I set up a timer record for 9 minutes but made it a recurring one every day. 18:50-18:59

then set a second recurring timer for 19:01 - 19:35

The first worked fine and the second one is currently going as well....
so it must be a finished non recurring recording issue thta keeps timers from working.
As long as all timers are recurring, and there are no finished nonrecurring timers in the list ... they seem to atleast start and not cause spinners.
One issue down.

now to try and get your logs.

@mountaineer, are you recording on ME or miniME? it shows only 123MB total - that looks like minime...
whatever you have on the ME, if its oatv with debug log option, could kick off recording and post the debug log and mesages/demsg..
or anyone else that has image that aborts recording.  the more logs the merrier to see if there is any common ground.
