Had this new box for a couple weeks now. At first I didn't like it at all, but it grew on me some. Warning, I am not a power user so to speak, I don't have any idea what a FEC is, nor a QPSK, could look it up, but don't really care that much. I point the dish and look for stuff.
Sat scan seemed to be a lot faster that I am used to with a Linkbox. There were several instances of the video jittering that I have not seen with other receivers. Too early to tell, but it seemed like it happened after a closeup shot of the soccer match I was watching, seems like it ocasionally chokes on higher video quality.
G4 C-band signal strength was 74/66. I disconnected the SR-1 and connected the Linkbox at the same satellite dish position and the signals strength was 98/88. Maybe this is an arbitrary number, I don't know, but it did tune in MeTV on 12181/8704 when the Linkbox didn't, again, I didn't move the dish, just moved the cable from one reciever to the other. This is a big plus if it tunes in signals not on the other receiver.
One button recording, like when you just press the record button, is set to maximum by default. Which means if you press record it will go until you press stop. I was expecting a time increment, like every other thing I have owned. But, once I found this in the settings it was easy to change.
I made a couple recordings, one that was 9 hours in length, the other just 0.5 hours and the playback was on 2x by default. I could speed it up using the fast forward, but no matter how I tinkered with it, it would not play the recorded video at 1x speed. Tried a different drive, this one worked. A USB 3.0 drive wasn't even recognized. Do a short test with your drive before you try to record something you really want to watch.
A few bad things:
The lights on the thing. When on, there is a green LED on the receiver and one on the remote eye, when you shut it off, these green LEDs turn bright red. Really? Do we really need a light to tell us it's off?
In the menu there seems to be a way to update the firmware, there is a URL box that is full of **********, like the address is a secret. It never does connect to anything. Either there is no firmware updates yet, or the default address is not correct.
Also, maybe it's just me, but it seems like I have to push the remote twice every time. Like to get to the menu, hit the menu once, nothing, twice, then it goes. Maybe the remote goes to sleep?
No batteries. Everything I have ever bought with a remote comes with cheap batteries.
All in all it seems pretty good. It's fast like other reports have said, and with my setup it seemed to pull in more channels.
