There is a C-Band dish about a block from my house. Looks to be a 6-8 ft mesh and its been up since I was in elementary school, I'm 36 now It.s mounted on pole that is leaning. Looks in good shape no dings and the black paint I didn't see any chips. I want to go ask about getting/buying the dish but don't know how to approach. Should I just go knock on the front door? I should add that I believe the owner passed away at the end of July, I believe this based on a google search on the address which brought me to voter records that had name, age, and address and the second link was for an obit for the same name, age, and from the same area.

I would knock on the door and ask. I's unlikely that they would be insulted or put off in any way by someone asking about it. If the owner did pass away, the property might sell and the dish would likely go away anyway. The family might like to have someone nearby taking it away and using it.
Good luck!

I knocked on a door in my neighborhood and said "Hi this might sound a little strange but I was thinking of getting one of these large dishes like you have" prepared to ask them more about what they thought about owning one etc etc. The response was quick - "Take mine, just take this one".

That happened twice.

I kept the better of the two and couldn't give the other one away. Eventually a guy reluctantly came and took it for scrap. Most people that still have these after many years of disuse consider them more of a nuisance or a blight on their property.

Go for it.

The worst that can happen is that they say NO.  They can't eat you, it's against the rules. [rofl]

I would open by asking if they are still using the dish and then go from there.  From your description, I would guess that you will end up with a dish.

I walked over there and I believe my thought of the owner passing away seems to be true. There is a padlock on the front gate, no lights on, and from the street looks like the house is empty not even curtains. I guess I will have to just keep checking and hope I catch someone when they are there or until the house comes down.

I'd tape a note to the door with my number and to call about the dish. They may be looking to sell the house soon and some see those BUDs and things that bring property value down....may want you to remove it for "FREE". That would be great..get a free dish and do someone else a favor.

Thanks for making feel better about asking. I'm not a very outgoing person so talking to someone like this is a little out of my comfort zone. I left a note  I hope I get a reply either way. As much fun as I am having with my slimline with a Avenger LNB gorilla taped to the arm in the right spot I am sure I am missing quite a bit even just ku PBS for on.

jholt....just for asking i have a 7.5.....2-10 footers and an 11 foot bigboy....

5 or 6 other BUDS have passed thru my yard over the years....

funny note...just up the road a half mile is a 10 footer that's been there 25 years...

nobody has used it in a long time.
3 older sisters used it and all passed away in time...a niece and husband live ther.

this coming january will be my 11th year in a row asking them for the dish.....

i warned them maybe 3 years ago if they didn't get rid of it or move it to storage, one day a tree would be growing thru it.....

that tree is getting pretty big now....lol

i can no longer see much of the dish....

funny part is, if they wanted money for the dish they never mentioned it...

maybe it's a monument to the 3 sisters...[smile]

No matter where I get one from getting it here might be a pain considering all I have is a PT Cruiser I suppose I could ratchet strap it to the roof. I'm guessing the looks will be similar when I carried my 27in CRT TV out to the dish.

I definitely would ask. The one dish I saw here in Rio Rancho, the person wanted 1000.00. They put it on Craigslist a few years ago for that price. Its gone now. They wouldn't budge off the price for me. Not sure what the price was when sold. There's another dish by the West Mesa pool in ABQ but they still use it. That's it for here.

I would just knock on the door on a weekend and ask. Can't hurt to ask. [smile]

Did you get a reply jholt?..I have nabbed many Cband dishes this way just by knocking on the door or leaving a note. Most of the time folks want them out of there yard.

Ur PT Cruiser will hall one just fine.Take the support legs off and put it on the roof.Love to see a pic of that.[biggrin]...Good luck.

No reply yet, but I am hopeful. I also have seen half dozen abandon gas stations around here with what looks a similar to a slimline dish, 3-4ft dishes just not sure how to contact someone about those.  Here is the pic I had in the other thread the white dot is roughly where the slimline is at. Hockeynut you mentioned the DS3100 WineGard think it would mount to the pole the slimline is on now? Untitled.png

Good question jholt.I am not sure about that.throw some calipers on the pole you have now.It appears that the Winegrd needs a pole  2 1/4"-2 5/8" according to Ricks specs.

It has been so long since I helped my friend set up his I dont recall the pole size he used.

Maybe if CWDM see`s this he will chime in and tell us.Not seen him around in awhile tho.

Keep in mind..The 1.2 Patriot that Rick sells also is a good performer according to some here. So going bigger is in most cases better.[biggrin]

maybe I should just go knocking around here and collect old Directv slimlines, dish 1000's, and hughesnet dishes and buy some more avenger lnbs and a couple of switches and park them at 121, 103, 105, 101, 99, 97, 95, 93, 91, and 87W I may not have a yard left but no more carrying my 27in CRT out to the dish [biggrin]
