I was wondering, do the networks use bird killer for most events, or do some events have the announcers talking during breaks? I remember ABC/ESPN never using it outside of MNF, because, i could hear the announcers during breaks on most events. CBS was using it after 1989 from what I've read.

Now days, pretty much everything has it..Occasionally there are a few but not many. PBA Bowling on 105w comes to mind. ABC MNF started after the Minneapolis debacle with the reporter watching the backhaul and writing about it. CBS started around that time with everything even the videocypher 1b MLB backhauls where the sound was itc but not the picture. NBC started with the Marv Albert NBA games only in the early 90's for a few years and then golf and then everywhere. NBC SNF has it back now too. [smile]

ESPN never used the bird killer, because i used to watch NASCAR a lot, and Benny Parsons would say hi to the folks watching on satellite before the race.

Yeah, Bob Jenkins and Larry Nuber used to always give a shout out to all the folks at a bar in Thunder Bay Ontario during the races.

I don't know what bird killer is,but I do remember watching the Nascar feeds on cband between '97 and '02 and hearing them say hello to the guys in Thunder Bay. I'm from TB and always wondered who they knew up here.

bird killer is what Dan Dierdorf always referred to as cutting the mics during commercial breaks to not hear the announcers.
pretty much the whole abc mnf crew used the term in the analog days.

I think the main reason for killing the mikes was because a lot of stuff was said and went out over the air that wasn't suppose to be heard.

My favorite was on CBS in the mid to late 80s with Pat Summerall and John Madden. They were at commercial when Summerall looked at Madden and said "what's wrong John?" and Madden replied, "I've got gas." Summerall said "thanks for letting me know that." I would have loved to seen Summerall's reaction if Madden would have got him while he was calling the game.

Yeah, some of Dennis Miller's best material was during the commercials on MNF.
