Interesting reading on the huge drop in ratings for NFL games....led by CBS ....so what do they do when 10% less people watch your product costing you millions.......$$$$$$$ the feeds. Great Answer LOL. So very very very sad!

I can tell you it was not a CBS call but from the NFL themselves.  The NFL is VERY protective of their out of market games.  They want to control everything, heck no company can even stream a game to a phone unless it is on Verizon.

At the end of the day DirecTV pays a kings ransom for the NFL Sunday Ticket package and as a result the NFL requires all games to be encrypted they don't want people at home (or worse for them bars) watching for free and not ordering the over priced package.  The encryption requirement is in the TV contracts that the networks sign to carry games.

CBS for many years left them ITC till the NFL got on their case and could not get Irdeto working so they went with BISS.  That worked for a few years till the NFL felt uncomfortable with BISS (not getting into keys here but will say CBS was very generous as to who they gave the key too)  This season with their new H264 422 Receivers they were able to get Irdeto working.

But at the end of the day CBS has no choice, that is why no other network feeds are encrypted including SEC games, prime time etc. Those are up to CBS if they want to encrypt or not,  the NFL is not up to them.  If the NFL demands something, you do it, or be stuck as a NFLless network when the next contract is up, not to mention they already agreed to do it and that the NFL on CBS has been encrypted since 2013..

Great explanation....CBS or NFL whoever made the call has a lot larger issue than whether CBS is scrambled or not.  A LOT BIGGER ISSUES.
Seems they are very worried about the seating arrangements in the ball room of the Titanic ....after the iceberg.

I coached football 20 years HS and college level...been to NFL games in most East Coast cities and Dallas.  The game has no bigger fan than me....but it is dying and the NFL seems to want to hasten its own death.
You get money by exposure and new fans. Sunday ticket is old.....and now costing them fans and money to be honest.

NFL

Do the following:

Show 2 1:00 pm games as you do now.

Show 2 : 4:30 games as you dont do now.

Show 2 Monday night games as you do on week 1.

Have Tuesday night games...instead of Thursday...teams that play on tuesday either get a bye the next week or cant play until Sunday or Monday night. Obviously they dont play on Sunday before.

Have one game in London in each week that starts at 9:15 or whatever.

That will be 8 games or half played on non bye weeks will be view able to all fans.

Dont scramble CBS or FOX.

Sell Sunday ticket if you want...sell single team package...sell streaming package on NFL.com  all teams or just one. Better yet have a free game of the week stream on NFL.com like MLB does on their channel. Heck show the worst matchups on there...but atleast their out of market fans will tune in.

The number of Eyeballs that see your games will increase...that is what advertisers pay for...advertisers pay for networks...networks pay NFL based on advertisers.  NFL has it all backwards..they are playing the networks off of each other instead of worrying about eyeballs. That works for a while...but when you turn enough eyeballs away...funds start drying up and playing networks off of each other works in reverse. They are nearing that now. Next contract time NFL will take in less revenue and salary cap will have to go down for the first time...but wont be last time. Maybe then they will begin to listen..or they will not make it to the lifeboats in time.

My 2 cents

Here's my 2 cents on the Sunday & Monday schedule (all times Eastern):

The 1PM games should be primarily east coast teams.
The 4:30PM games should be the featured games (2) with national interest.
Do away with SNF, and instead have 8PM games that are primarily west coast teams.
Of course, when an east coast team is playing on the west coast, or v-v, then you might still have a 10AM start on the west coast, or an 8PM start on the east coast for the local team.
Also, I don't see the need for the alternating format where one week Fox has two games and CBS has one, then it switches the other way around the next week, until later in the season. It routinely leads to some bizarre choices - just look at the maps at the 506. This week WSVN Fox-7 in Miami is showing Seattle at TN at 4PM for the simple reason that it's the only game available at 4PM, not because that match up might be of local interest, and they aren't allowed to show a game at 1PM while the Dolphins are on CBS. Given the population of south FL, and the quality of the match up, the NY Giants at the Eagles would be a better choice, and in fact that's what the Fox station in West Palm Beach is showing. This sort of thing happens every week. Let both networks have two games each week, all season.

Put SNF (the national game of the week) back on Monday, where it was for decades, and where it belongs.
Move the ESPN Monday game to Tuesday or whatever. The current Monday game is usually not as good as the Sunday Night game. I liked it a lot better when it was on MNF.

I`m taking a knee for 30 teams.Only time I watch is when my Panthers are playing. Now if any Panther takes a knee I am completely done.( Unless Jerry Richardsons heart is strong enough and yanks that player up and slaps the crap out of him and tells him to stand )Just my 2 cents why the bouncing around of the topic of NFL ratings being down.

NHL season cranking up..Thanks for the Flyers,Islanders feed last light gopher..I always wanted ESPN to carry NHL games and after all this I am glad ESPN does not carry any..

Go Hurricanes.[biggrin]

I thought this was interesting.

Scroll down to the bottom left..
4000 seats shy of sellout on opening day? Seriously??
No facts to go by other than the above and my recollection, but I can't remember in my lifetime an opening day that wasn't.
Maybe it's not just the TV??

This whole discussion reminds me of the Indy 500 local broadcast blackout. But we won't go there.

Ok guys, let's keep the talk within Rick's rules.  I also have an opinion but there are other places for me to voice it.

Some posts not related to satellite schedule/feeds were removed.

Honestly I don't know, if I had to guess I would say yes but don't know anyone who works for CTV / has any business with them.  I don't believe the people who work with the US networks are the same people who handle Canada as that is International.   If DirecTV made a complaint to the NFL I bet something would be done about it but let's all hope that never happens.  My guess is CTV just flys under the radar so to speak.   CTV/Bell owns rights to all of the NFL in Canada and freely lets anyone order out of market stations so cannot see a desire to spend money and time encrypting unless someone forces them too.

I don't think it will be a issue unless some bar does not have NFL ST and starts showing CTV feeds and someone reports it to the NFL.   Thankfully C-Band really is not main stream enough IMO so I don't see that happening.

When I look at the CTV muxes with TSReader, it shows a Conditional Access pid showing the following:

CAT Version Number: 1
Descriptor: CA Descriptor
CA System ID: 0 (0x0000) Standardized
CA PID 1005 (0x03ed)
Descriptor: CA Descriptor
CA System ID: 0 (0x0000) Standardized
CA PID 1003 (0x03eb)
Descriptor: CA Descriptor
CA System ID: 0 (0x0000) Standardized
CA PID 1004 (0x03ec)

I don't watch CTV much, so I don't know if this is something new or if it has always been there.

I've never heard of "Standardized" encryption, but it's currently not being used.

Why is there so much of an uproar about CBS scrambling feeds this season?  Haven't they been scrambling them for the last 5 years or so???

I don't know Geez.  This is at least the 3rd season of scrambling, I believe.  At least we can get some games free.  I would understand uproar against Roger "money bags" Goodell though.

What we're looking at is greed. I agree with Mountaineer. The name of the game is eyes on the screen. That's why they don't worry about Canadian feeds.
They want to increase international viewership but they're losing their base by taking it away from the working Joe.  I know too many folks who just don't have cable.
There was a time you could watch the game even if you were at work if someone had a telly. Now they have to have a telly and a subscription.
And with the advent of soccer and a growing hispanic populace, they have folks who will never learn or be indoctrinated into the sport.
I used to attend NFL games with my brother in-law, a sportswriter, and the adjoining boxes were reserved for businessmen and their clients. None of whom watched or cared about the game. The press box was full of drunks....and the kids who really cared and knew the games were left out. They can kill the game and it looks like taking it away from the working guys who played it as kids will do that!
