Unclefrank,

Yes I have used it for a PVR and it works well.  I use an external 500 GB eSATA drive that was previously formatted through my Elite so I just plugged it in and it was ready to go.

If you have an internal drive turn off the receiver, unplug it from power, and install the drive.  The hardware directions state that it should find the drive and you should be able to format it.  Not sure as I hadn't hadn't done that.

One thing you need to do is make sure you create a folder called "Movie" on the root of your new drive.  This is where it will store recordings and it uses that folder for time-shift.  If you don't create that folder it will fill up the NAND or flash memory and the only way to clear it would be to re-flash that partition again.  I was able to just create the "Movie" folder using windows explorer through My Network Places.  You should be able to see the drive once it is formatted then you can make the folder.

Thanks Emil for the help and the instructions. I think I will go with the external HDD for now as well as my new 1.5 WD internal will not format and is making a terrible sound as the platters spin. DOA I assume? <img border="0" align="absmiddle" src="http://rickcaylor.websitetoolbox.com/images/boards/smilies/frown.gif">
One small problem I noticed on the Me- there is about a 15 second delay after I press the button to record before the recording actually starts. This occurs on the high bitrate HD feeds on G16 C band. I am using a 500 gb external HDD that worked fine with other boxes.

I just ordered my copy of AzBox Me. I took advantage of the Forum Special here. Thanks, Rick!

Currently have an Elite with an Elite-formatted USB HDD attached. If I replace the Elite with a ME, can the drive be plugged in and used with the ME with no loss of stored programs?

it shouldnt be a problem.. I'm sure the AZme will recognize the drive. the elite formats the harddrive in linux... I would think the AZme does also...

Is the ME capable of an add on ATSC tuner and is one slated for production? I don't see anything on their site about this. Also would like to see an "app" for schedules direct guide download. It would be nice to replace my power hungry htpc with a ME as my media center.

I actually did exactly that.  I used my external HD from the Elite and just plugged it in using its eSATA connector and everything was there and played fine.

The only thing you have to do is create a folder called MOVIE in the root of the drive.  If not it will fill up your flash portion of that image since it defaults to that.  Also you will need to reflash that partition to free up the recorded space from the flash if you can not delete the file.

I haven't heard anything planned for an external ATSC tuner officially.  Since it is open source it is possible.  It would have to be a USB tuner.

Has anyone tried hooking up an NTFS drive to this receiver? Does it record and play back high bitrate files to NTFS drives?

NTFS is not a format that the Me uses as it's Linux based and uses ext3.  Once formatted in ext3 it does record and play high bit rate feeds.

First thanks EmilNJ for the very informative review. I am tempted but cannot spend the money at this time. My question is about the CBS sports (football) backhauls that only have Dolby E. My Ultra does not like feeds with no audio PID. Did you have a chance to try the Me out on one of these feeds? Thanks.

Where is the website located?

Emil,,

The pdf that shows how to load firmware indicates that you could do it with a flash drive in the usb port. Have you tried this method?  Running a cable from my router to the receiver would not be impossible, but very difficult.

just a thought- take the receiver to the router.
