Doesn't sound like this is working.  I remember an fsck taking like 20 minutes on a 2GB ext2 drive.   Seems to me mkfs didn't take as long. That would have been on a pentium 133. That's how antique ext2 is.  Too bad they don't update the firmware to support a modern file system.  They maybe didn't put enough memory on the board to be able to do that.

If you are serious about recording stuff a computer setup is the answer.  Even for playing TV it seems to handle much more than your average STB.  When my coolsat dies I don't think I'll get another STB, just stick with the computer.

I do appreciate everyone's feedback.  For some reason the thought of integrating my computer in with my receivers and TV doesn't appeal to me.  There's probably less than 10 times a year when I would want to record from the Az Elite, so it seems like some sort of powered 500 gb external drive is the answer.  Or maybe the Elite won't record HD well on to anything?

Pops,

I have a 1 TB USB external powered hard drive attached to my Azbox Elite. I reformatted the drive using the Elite which formats the drive in Linux. I originally had some issues until I followed the advice that I found on a forum and did the Linux format. IIR, the Linux format overcomes the file size limit of Windows. Most of the recording that I do is of hi def programming, typically one-time specials, concerts and the like. For instance, thanks to signal info on this forum, I recorded the feeds from London of the 25th Anniversary performances of both Les Miserables and of Phantom of the Opera, two of my favorite shows. These were one-time events being fed back to the US for showing in theaters. Each show is over 20gb on the drive. I play them back with the Elite. The video and audio is spectacular on my 58" plasma and surround sound system..

Thanks MGB80.  Would you mind sharing which external hard drive you are using and a link to the thread/source that tells how to format in Linux?

Those 2 theater shows used about 18.5 Mbps video bitrates.  I agree that it was nice, but it's not near as fast as the high bitrate network feeds.  My Elite used to play back ~18 MBps video OK whether formatted fat32 or ext2, although recently when I tried I had problems, but that was on an old hard drive that may have been fragmented.  But I've never had any success with an Azbox on the real high bitrate stuff.  It probably would work with the replace the MOM method, but not with an external USB drive.
I do all my network recording of the 30-40 Mbps network stuff using a computer like Bluzee said.

Fellow Members, your posts are welcome here! Do not worry about posting everything perfect. Different receivers and LNB's will give you different Frequencies and Symbol Rates. Some set top boxes, PCI cards and USB receivers, Do Not Require all of the same information that others may need. It is not Required to post everything that others may need to tune in a feed. It is just most important to share the find. We can always adjust the Frequency and Symbol Rates and try the various Modulations and FEC's on our own receivers until we get a lock and then give a polite reply with what works for your receiver, as that information might help others as well. We all appreciate the efforts and energy of the Posters!
